Jon Culshaw on Dead Ringers tour honouring late creator ‘His final project’ | Theatre | Entertainment

Culshaw remembered: “You'd watch in awe as he just set about building the show and nurturing it with this wonderful knowledge, confidence and instinct for how to make all the elements of humour just flow together. It was amazing to observe him. We've done two episodes of this new radio series and we miss him enormously. He put everything in place so strongly as to how the show should be made and built. Whenever it was as challenging recording day, whether we were up against time or whether a whole raft of brand new breaking news came in (which meant the whole show had to be dumped and we had to start all over again), Bill was very, very cool and smooth at that, and he took that in his stride so stunningly. And in his absence, we all feel that now we've got to take a bit of that pragmatic attitude and push forward. We can hear his instructions in the back of our minds. And sometimes, when people go, you sort of find them again. It’s very surreal doing it without him.”

Dead Ringers: The 25th Anniversary Tour was one of the last projects Dare worked on. Culshaw continued: “It was very quickly decided that the show must continue; the show must go on. He was starting to put together what the concept of it should be. He made a start of that, that it should be a 25 year look back at the history of the news that coursed through while we've been on the air. It’ll be very much like a radio recording, but with more of a feeling of a stand up show with a bit more spontaneity, a little bit more unpredictability and interaction with the audience. And unlike a radio format, which is the topicality of that day or that week, it'll be a retrospective look over the last 25 years.”

With this in mind he’s promised fans the likes of: John Major, Tony Blair, George Bush, Gordon Brown, Barack Obama, David Cameron, Liz Truss, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Joe Biden and both Donald Trump 45 and 47.

Asked what his favourite impressions to do are, Culshaw added: “They change like stocks and shares. I love the scientists. I love Professor Brian Cox, Carl Sagan, Patrick Moore and David Attenborough. The VIP is always great fun. King Charles, Donald Trump. Keir Starmer is another one who's funny because of the humdrum and the over caution to the point of being completely clenched.”

Dead Ringers: The 25 Anniversary Tour kicks off at Edinburgh Playhouse on August 16 before touring the rest of the UK from September 18 to October 23. For tickets and more information, click here.
