Expert shares mushroom storage tip that 'maximises flavour and longevity'

Keeping mushrooms fresh can be quite tricky, especially since they tend to start browning and losing their firm texture quickly.

The trick to maintaining the freshness of store-bought mushrooms lies, not only in the storage conditions but also in the way they are handled.

Food experts at Urban Farm-It have shared an insight into how mushrooms should be handled before being put away at home.

They said: "Mushrooms are not only versatile but are also packed with essential nutrients, including B vitamins and antioxidants.

“To make the most of them, you should handle them with care, keeping them unwashed and storing them properly to prevent spoilage.

“Whether you're using common varieties or more exotic types, proper storage is key to maximising their flavour and longevity."

Knowing how to store mushrooms properly is crucial for maintaining their texture and extending their shelf life.

By following some straightforward techniques recommended by culinary expert Martha Stewart on her website, you can prevent the unpleasant slime that often spoils your favourite dishes.

One effective technique is to place whole, unwashed mushrooms inside a brown paper bag and fold the top to seal it.

If you don’t have a brown paper bag available, wrapping the mushrooms in a paper towel and placing them in a bowl in the fridge is a fantastic alternative, as this also helps absorb excess moisture to keep them fresh.

It's best to steer clear of plastic containers; if your mushrooms arrive in a sealed plastic package, be sure to remove them and use one of the methods mentioned instead.

Traci Weintraub, chef and founder of Gracefully Fed, explains that using paper helps absorb extra moisture, which keeps your mushrooms in great condition.
