Luke Humphries set to spend £200k prize money on appearance change | Other | Sport

Luke Humphries is set to splash a chunk of his prize money from the World Darts Matchplay on getting his teeth straightened.

The Englishman romped to his first-ever Matchplay title over the weekend, continuing his sensational form at the oche in the last 12 months.

Alongside taking home the illustrious Phil Taylor Trophy, Humphries strengthened his position at the top of the PDC Order of Merit.

By beating the Dutchman, Cool Hand Luke pocketed a whopping £200,000, giving him a close to £600,000 lead over world No.2 Michael van Gerwen.

And in the aftermath of Sunday’s triumph, Humphries revealed he’s investing in a course of teeth straightening.

The world No.1 said: "Unfortunately for me, I've got to have, not quite braces but some Invisaline put on my teeth.”

Humphries isn’t the only darts star getting dental treatment, with Van Gerwen also having his mouth looked at.

The 2024 world champion continued: "You know, Michael [van Gerwen] is having a big operation as well.

“I'm going to have my teeth all corrected and straightened so that's going to hurt for a few weeks so I'll have to get over that but I'm glad to be getting it sorted and look back to being healthy again."

On his upcoming dental surgery, Van Gerwen commented: ''In 14 hours I will be under the knife.

“Why so soon? Because the doctor has time then. It's part of the job. I've been looking forward to it for a long time and I'm also looking forward to the second half of the season.”

With the next major televised event on the schedule not until October, a gap in the calendar has arrived for Humphries and Van Gerwen to undergo their teeth treatments.

But, given his performances have never been as good, Humphries might be rueing the big gap between tournaments.

Reacting to his latest major win - a fifth in nine months - Humphries said: "Honestly, I've felt more emotion than when I won the worlds. I am going to watch back that double tops 100 times tonight. I feel so blessed to have my name on that trophy.

"I am absolutely over the moon. I am emotional, it really means the world to me."
