Cultural shocks is not uncommon when visiting a new country, as learning the different ways and habits people have in other places can be a weird thing to come across sometimes.

However, it might be less expected to experience cultural shocks when it comes to our pets, as you'd assume their lives would look quite similarly across the whole world. Alas, this is not always the case.

Colombian American Melissa was one of the many people who have experienced this, as she took to her social media to express her shock after learning the difference cultural customs of bringing dogs to the park during her recent visit to London.

"Tell me why in the UK, every dog that I see walking at a park, at the forest, is loose," she said at the start of her video.

Melissa then went onto explain what she meant, as she said how she found it 'weird' that dogs in the UK were around to move around without a lead.

“Like that dog is a German Shepherd and he’s just loose," she said as she pointed out a dog walking around in a park behind her, with its owner walking with it.

Explaining the reason she found the practice odd, Melissa shared it wasn't a common sight in the US. She said: "In the US, people would freak out. It is not normal to just go to the park and have your dog loose."

She went onto explain: "Usually, they have dog parks within the park, and they divide those into small and big dogs. That’s where you can actually have your dog, just like, loose."

This was a big difference to what she experienced during her time in the UK, as she found a lot of dogs around public places without a lead.

In the UK, there is no law requiring dogs to be kept on a lead in all public spaces, unlike in other countries. But there are a series of orders that mean you have to leash your dog in certain places in your local area. For example in children’s play areas, sports pitches, roads, parks and beaches.

"But here in the UK, I love to see that dogs are just free," Melissa said. "They don’t cause a scene or fight. They kinda like have like a conduct manual, they were born with that they just know to stick with the owner and not to mess with other dogs."

"It's so strange and I love it," she told her viewers, who were quick to take to the comment section of the video to share their thoughts on the matter.

"No dog parks in the UK, so have to be trained," one viewer said, while a second person said: "We go to dog training classes."

A third person also added: "I guarantee that there is months worth of training that has gone into the majority of off lead dogs in the UK."

"I’ve lived in 7 cities London included. I’ve never seen dogs as well behaved as those in London. I don't know what it is," a fourth person shared, while another wrote: "Trained our dog 1.5 years in the UK. Moved to the US and realised most dogs here don’t have any basic recall."
