Retro sweet's new flavour to mark 70 years since it was first created

There are certain things that hold a great deal of nostalgic power over people. It could be that song from your teenage years, the pasta dish that only your nan could make, or perhaps that sweet that takes you right back to your carefree days on the school playground.

For many, that sweet is a Swizzles Refresher bar, with its iconic tangy fizz, which is almost addictive when you are nine (or 39). But it is certainly not a treat confined to nostalgia, Swizzles still makes the classic chew, 70 years on since the first original lemon flavour hit the shelves. And they have also added a new flavour — tropical — to make seven decades of the chewy candy retailing at 20p per bar.

It was way back in 1928 that Alfred and Maurice Matlow launched Matlow Bros. Ltd making jelly sweets in a small factory in London.

From there, they built an empire Willy Wonka would envy. Rainbow Drops, another of the Swizzles sweets you can still enjoy, were first in stores in the 1930s and originally sold loose and scooped into bags.

Fizzers came shortly after followed by the Bettabar - a bar of puffed rice in a caramel syrup and no longer available.

It was during WWII that the head office and main factory was moved to New Mills in Derbyshire where the factory was used to help the war effort by making water purifying tablets for the Ministry of Defence.

In 1946, the love-them-or-hate-them fragrant Parma Violets were launched, and the beloved Love Hearts came in 1954, swiftly followed by the uniquely chalky double lollies.

Then, 70 years ago, in 1955 New Refreshers were stocked in sweet shops across the UK, named "new" so not to be confused with Barratte's Refresher tablet-like sweets. The original packaging had cartoons of children believed to be the Matlow family.

The flat chewy sweet had sherbet running through the middle and came in the classic lemon and strawberry varieties.

You can now get the bar in sour apple, cherry cola and tropical flavour - I got to try the tropical and I have to say, I think it is the best Refresher flavour.

Hints of pineapple and mango with the classic sweetness and fizzy tang of a Refresher, what is not to like? And they are vegan friendly too.

Many of the people who also tired a Refresher commented on how they were a huge part of their childhood - because good sweets are a big deal to kids.

Some said how they "hadn't had a Refresher in years", but they are not just for kids so there is nothing stopping you indulging in a bit of nostalgia.

And if you want to reminisce, you can get all the Refresher flavours on their website or you can pick some up on Amazon.

Where you will also find their other classic sweets like Dip Dabs, Drumstick lollies and Squashies - including the new Squashies flavours tropical and sour.
