New budget Android phone gets 3 big upgrades the iPhone won't match

The wonderful world of Android is difficult to keep up with given there are so many new devices announced each and every month, but the latest crop of affordable phones from Motorola catch the eye thanks to impressive spec sheets that the much pricier Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and iPhone 16 Pro Max struggle to match up to.

At just £299.99, the Moto G86 Power 5G sports an absolutely enormous 6,720mAh battery that Motorola says can provide up to 53 hours of use. I don’t think I have ever heard of a mainstream Android phone sold in the UK with a battery that big.

For comparison, the £1,249 Galaxy S25 Ultra tops out at 5,000mAh, while the £1,199 iPhone 16 Pro Max has 4,685mAh. In testing, Express.co.uk found both those phones can sometimes last for two days between charges, so I’d expect the G86 Power to stretch that to close to three days, really living up to name.

Motorola says as much, claiming “users can go the entire weekend without needing their charger”. The phone also has 30W wired charging speeds, which is quicker to top up than the 25W speeds on the Samsung Galaxy S25, a phone that costs a whopping £799.

“The battery works alongside the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, which is even faster than the previous generation,” said Motorola.

“This combination lets consumers use their device with ease, regardless of what they’re trying to accomplish. Whether sharing photos with friends, checking emails or playing a new game, users can expect responsive, consistent performance.”

Moto’s G series of phones have always been about value for money, and that rings true with the G86 Power.

Around the front this new Android blower has a 6.67-inch Super HD pOLED screen with support for HDR10+ content and will get plenty bright at up to 4,500 nits - far brighter than the S25 Ultra that tops out at 2,600 nits, meaning the Moto’s screen could be easier to read in the sun for a penny less than £300.

The impressive-looking phone also packs in a 50MP main camera alongside (an admittedly paltry) 8MP ultra-wide plus a 32MP selfie shooter. You’ll also get stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support, and there’s 8GB RAM and 512GB storage on offer too, which is excellent for the price.

Unexpectedly, the phone also has IP68 and IP69 dust and water resistance ratings, making it more resistant to these factors than both the S25 Ultra and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, and matches phones such as the £1,099 Honor Magic 7 Pro.

If all this weren’t tempting enough, Motorola has continued its longstanding partnership with colour maestros Pantone, meaning you can pick up the G86 Power in three eye-catching colours - Cosmic Sky, Chrysanthemum, Golden Cypress and Spellbound. It’s a refreshing change from the dull colours phone makers tend to use.

The G86 Power will be available to buy soon from Motorola in the UK. The firm also announced the Moto G86 with a smaller (but still large) 5,200mAh battery for £279.99 and the Moto G56, which has military standard build and costs just £199.99. All four phones ship with Android 15 and come with Moto’s latest AI software tools.
