MEETINGOFTHEWATERS (4.00) can rock the boat at odds of 20-1 in this year’s Randox Grand National at Aintree. William Hill make him fourth best of a strong JP McManus contingent, 15 years after the owner made a breakthrough with AP McCoy-ridden Don’t Push It in 2010. Last year’s winner I Am Maximus returns in the famous green and gold hoops to try to match the two triumphs of small and mighty Tiger Roll.

The top weight won’t give up his title without a fight, but might find the concession of 19lb to fellow Willie Mullins-trained runner Meetingofthewaters too much of an ask. Seventh 12 months ago, the eight-year-old was right there with one to jump until an action-packed season appeared to catch up with him on an unrelenting final stretch.

And it is interesting Danny Mullins sticks with my selection, instead of jumping back aboard his 2024 bet365 Gold Cup winner Minella Cocooner, who is several points shorter in the market.

A strong stayer off a weight of 11st 2lb, he should give his best for Jonathan Burke, who is enjoying a dream season in a new job.

McManus has several others worthy of consideration, led by Iroko in a race close to co-handler Oliver Greenall’s heart. His father served as Aintree chairman for 25 years so it is an important date in the calendar for a horse with plenty of handicapping upside.

Strong at the end of three miles, Iroko found only future Gold Cup king Inothewayurthinkin too good in the Grade One Mildmay Novices’ Chase here last term and remains unexposed.

I Am Maximus shoulders an extra 8lb in his bid to emulate all-time legend Red Rum, the last horse to oblige from top weight all the way back in 1974.

That shows how hard it is but vibes from the team appear to be positive and lacklustre form figures are of little concern with one main objective all season.

Perceval Legallois is the other main player for McManus and looks to be Gavin Cromwell’s number one after charging through for first in a competitive 27-runner event at Leopardstown over Christmas.

Quality former novice Three Card Brag earns a place on the shortlist having sneaked into the £1million race by the skin of his teeth. However, his chance would have been better with a wetter forecast.
