Bombshell Starmer poll reveals voters baffled about what PM stands for | Politics | News

Since taking over the Labour leadership from Jeremy Corbyn following Labour's landslide defeat in 2019, Sir Keir Starmer has frequently been accused of ideological flip-flopping. Now a startling new poll reveals that voters are getting more confused about what the Prime Minister stands for as time goes on.

Pollsters YouGov asked 2213 British voters what their elected leader stood for in late June 2024, just prior to the General Election. Then, 49% of those surveyed were "uncertain" about what he stood, compared to 42% that were "clear" or that had a "broad idea" about his principles. Now, however, only 33% of the surveyed group have clear or broad idea about what the 62-year-old represents, while 60% are uncertain.

Even the Labour voters in the surveyed group are becoming more unclear about what Sir Keir is all about. In June 2024, 75% of Labour supporters were confident they knew what he believed in, now that figure is just 50%.

Last year, just 21% of Labour's backers were uncertain about their leaders values. The latest polling has seen that percentage swell to 45%.

When asked whether or not Sir Keir is a good leader, the figures make equally sorry reading. Just 16% of respondents think he has been a "great" or "good" leader, down six percentage points on 2023.

Meanwhile, 45% of those asked said he was a "poor" or "terrible" leader, up 17% on 2023's numbers.

Labour supporters themselves are torn about whether Sir Keir has changed Labour for the better. Given the disquiet on his own side's benches in the House of Commons, and the tendency of the Labour grassroots to lean further to the Left than most in the parliamentary party, perhaps this is unsurprising.

Nevertheless, Number 10 will not be pleased to read a slim majority (35%) of Labour voters think he has made the party worse, compared to 32% that think he's made it better.
