Paul Hollywood shares best biscuit for dunking - but Brits don't agree




There's nothing quite like the perfect pairing of a warm cup of tea and a delicious biscuit for dunking. Whether you're a devoted fan of digestives, a bourbon buff, or a malted milk aficionado, everyone has their go-to biscuit of choice.

However, Paul Hollywood, renowned judge of the Great British Bake Off, has revealed his ultimate biscuit for dunking - and it may spark some debate. Standing proudly in front of a display of his beloved treats, cup of tea at the ready, he proclaimed, "I've been looking forward to this," as he grasped a ginger biscuit, poised to take the plunge.

"Cup of tea, dunk in your ginger biscuit...nothing better," he raved.

His enthusiasm was echoed by others, who insisted that for them, ginger biscuits had to be "be homemade, of course," and described them as "yummy". If you're inspired to give Paul's top pick a try, you can find a simple recipe on BBC Good Food, which rates them as "easy" to make.

How to make ginger biscuits

You will need: 

  • 100g salted butter, cubed
  • 75g light brown soft sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of grated fresh ginger
  • 100g golden syrup
  • 250g self-raising flour
  • 1 and a half tablespoons of ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda
  • a small egg yolk, beaten

To get started, preheat your oven to 190 degrees C, 170C fan, gas 5, and line two baking trays with baking parchment. Next, melt the butter, sugar, fresh ginger, and golden syrup in a saucepan over low heat, taking care not to let anything burn.

Once melted, set the mixture aside to cool. Next, combine flour, ground ginger, and bicarbonate of soda in a bowl.

Gradually incorporate the cooled sugar mixture and egg white, kneading briefly until you achieve a biscuit dough consistency.

Shape the dough into 20g balls and place them on the tray with a 3cm gap between each to allow for spreading - you wouldn't want them merging into one giant biscuit.

Bake for 8-10 minutes until golden brown, then let them cool on the tray for a minute or two before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely. Once cooled, they're ready to be enjoyed.
