Expert shares when you should mow lawn for first time this spring

As spring arrives makes its arrival, homeowners across the UK may start turning their attention to their lawns to get them in the best condition for the warmer weather. With a perfect lawn being the pride and joy of many gardens, it can be quite important to start getting lawn maintenance underway at just the right time.

This includes knowing just when to start mowing the grass. Luckily, the experts at British Garden Centres, the nation's leading family-owned garden centre group, have shared just this. They said: "The first mow of spring should be done when the grass reaches 5-8cm (2-3 inches).

"Start with a light trim and gradually lower the mower blades to a 25mm (1 inch) cutting height. Mow only when the grass is dry to ensure even cuts and to prevent pests, diseases, and potential damage to the mower."

Mowing before it reaches the recommended height and when it is still dormant can stress the blades, weaken grass roots, encourage thatch buildup, and promote weed growth.

The experts also recommend waiting for a dry spring day rather than mowing while the ground is still damp.

For the first mow, the experts advise that you should not remove more than one-third of the grass blade's height.

They add that mid-morning is the ideal time for the first more, as it allows time for the dew to evaporate while also leaving time for the grass to dry before the evening.

The experts said: "After your first mow, you don’t need to do it again more than once every two weeks, increasing to weekly during the summer months when the growing season is in full swing."
