How to remove limescale from shower screens fast and naturally

Limescale of the chalky and unsightly nature is something most homeowners will encounter at some point.

While limescale isn’t harmful, it can quickly build up around areas that are constantly exposed to water, like your shower screen.

Shower screens are notoriously hard to clean, and unfortunately, a grimy shower screen can make an otherwise clean bathroom look grubby and unkempt.

Whereas a lot of shop-bought cleaners will work effectively on most parts of your bathroom, the combination of limescale and soap scum on the glass means that most of your typical products won’t be strong enough to cut through the build-up on a shower screen, and they can quickly get worse over time.

The good news is that with the right know-how, there are certain solutions you can make at home to keep your shower screen looking as good as new all year round - all you need is one natural ingredient.

According to the professionals at Fantastic Cleaners, using white vinegar is “truly the best way to wash a shower or any glass to perfection”.

They said: “Thanks to its descaling and germ-killing powerful abilities, it’s especially useful in problematic areas like the bathroom.

“The vinegar cleaning method is fast and easy, which comes in handy when you have more to cover, like entire shower glass enclosures.”

For this method, fill a spray bottle with pure white vinegar solution or dilute it using a one-to-one ratio to hot water.

Spray it thoroughly on both sides of the shower screen and leave it to sit for five minutes for the “acid to dissolve the limescale”. The time can be extended if the limescale buildup is heavy.

Rinse well with water before polishing the glass using a microfibre cloth or cotton rag to “make your shower screen spotless”.

If you think your shower glass could use a deeper cleaning, combining vinegar and baking soda is “easy and effective”.

The white crystals can work through thicker soap scum and limescale formations thanks to being abrasive.

The method is quite simple, too. After following the first two steps, dampen a sponge and sprinkle on baking soda.

Finish off by scrubbing gently on both sides of the glass screen. Leave the ingredients to react for a few minutes and then rinse well.
