Your AirPods may finally get a long-awaited free upgrade from Apple

Those who happen to have the latest AirPods Pro 2 earbuds in their possession are getting an important update next month. It's been confirmed that Apple will finally be able to release its "Hearing Aid" function to these devices after being given the green light by UK health authorities. This will allow these premium AirPods to boost things such as voices and general sound around them.

Apple has created this feature, especially for those with low or moderate hearing loss. "AirPods Pro add an innovative over-the-counter Hearing Aid capability for users with mild to moderate hearing loss," the US firm explained.

"This new feature seamlessly transforms AirPods Pro into a clinical-grade hearing aid."

After setup, the feature works by enabling personalised dynamic adjustments so users have the sounds around them boosted in real-time. This should then help owners better engage in conversation - it also keeps them connected to the people and environment around them.

It's an upgrade that was signed off by US regulators back in September 2024 but British medical experts have been dragging their heels.

Thankfully, that's now changing with British Health Secretary, Wes Streeting telling the Telegraph, “Britain can be a powerhouse for medical technology, but only if we rip out pointless regulation that suffocates innovation."

With the red tape removed, Apple can now proceed with the launch of Hearing Aid.

"With the new policy guidance from the U.K. Department of Health and Social Care, we look forward to bringing the hearing aid feature on AirPods Pro 2 in the coming weeks to help improve the daily lives of so many U.K. users,” Apple said in a statement sent also sent to the Telegraph.

This change follows the recent launch of the 'Hearing Test' update, which does exactly what it says on the tin. As long as you have the latest iOS update installed - and own AirPods Pro 2 buds - you should then see the option to ‘Take a Hearing Test’.

The test is just like you have at a clinic, with the buds letting out different tones and bleeps at variable volumes. When you hear something, you just tap the iPhone’s screen to register your hearing reactions.

At the end of the test, users then get a score which shows if they are suffering from any loss of hearing and how bad it is.

If the score says moderate loss, the Hearing Aid feature can then be enabled to improve things.

There's no exact launch date for "Hearing Aid" but hopefully we'll have more news soon.
