Tottenham can sign five players this month to save Ange Postecoglou from sack | Football | Sport

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has admitted that the club hierarchy will act with “urgency” in the transfer window after another chastening defeat. The Australian had only 13 senior players available ahead of his side's 3-2 defeat by Everton, in which Spurs were 3-0 down at half-time.

Even before a sweeping injury crisis, Postecoglou’s Spurs lacked depth and experience. It needs to be a busy fortnight for the club if they are to save their head coach from the sack.

Express Sport picks out five signings Spurs could make.

Lille forward David will be available at the end of the season as a free agent. However, Spurs are desperate for attacking additions and must get ahead of the competition by landing the Canadian in January.

It remains to be seen whether the French club will accept a small fee to avoid losing David for nothing in January. Spurs can only test the water to find out.

Postecoglou needs new forwards this month. Dominic Solanke has performed well when available, but his injury history should be a concern for the North Londoners. David can play anywhere across the forward line, with Spurs’ wingers also struggling for consistency.

Angel Gomes

A lack of midfield options prompted Postecoglou into a formation change against Everton. It backfired spectacularly and the visitors were carved open in a draw-dropping first half.

Even when available, Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur have struggled this season. Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr - who started against Everton - are the future but remain inconsistent due to their age.

England international Gomes would be an excellent addition. The 24-year-old - who finds himself in a similar contractual position to Lille team-mate David - is composed and dictates possession. He would fit into Postecoglou’s system very well.

Ansu Fati

It remains a mystery why Spurs do not seem to be succession-planning for Son Heung-min’s eventual exit. The South Korean is 33 in the summer and only has a year remaining on his contract. None of Spurs’ other wingers are up to his standard.

Postecoglou could therefore take a January punt on former wonderkid Fati. The forward has been left out of Barcelona’s last three matchday squads.

Injuries have been an issue for the Spaniard, who performed well when fit while on loan at Brighton last season. But Postecoglou could be the man to get the best out of the 22-year-old, who could be the most attainable left winger this month.

Fikayo Tomori

Spurs cannot continue to use Archie Gray at centre-back. The former Leeds star - a midfielder or right-back - is being hung out to dry in the centre of a back four and once again looked uncomfortable against Everton.

First-choice centre-backs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have both missed large parts of the campaign with injuries and Spurs need more depth in the position. Former Chelsea man Tomori has been linked with a return to the Premier League during January and Spurs should be in the queue for the experienced 27-year-old.

Milan Skriniar

Spurs have tended to sign younger players who can be developed into stars. However, their predicament means that focus should shift to some older players to put an arm around Postecoglou’s youthful talent.

The 29-year-old Skriniar has long been linked with a move to the Premier League and Spurs should make it happen. He has played just five times for PSG in Ligue 1 this season, while the North Londoners have been linked with a deal.
