Emma Raducanu sends Andy Murray long apology as 'bad blood' put to bed | Tennis | Sport

Emma Raducanu has revealed she has apologised and made peace with Andy Murray after ruining the Scot’s planned final farewell at Wimbledon.

And the rapprochement opens up the chance of Murray - who is coaching Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open - working with Raducanu in future. “I just hope he doesn't hate me too much!” she laughed.

The 2021 US Open champion upset the three-time Grand Slam winner with her late withdrawal from the mixed doubles after Murray had lost in the doubles.

Raducanu cited a sore wrist before her singles match the following day but Judy Murray still called the announcement “astonishing”.

Playing in the mixed doubles would have been Murray’s final appearance at the All England Club - and Raducanu still lost in the fourth round of the singles to Kiwi world No.1234 Lulu Sun the following day

Raducanu labelled Murray “old news” before the first Grand Slam after his retirement at last year’s Olympics.

But the Bromley-based star, 22, has now said she apologised to Murray last summer to end any feud - and the Scot congratulated her on her first round win at the Australian Open.

Speaking after reaching the third round in Melbourne for the first time, Raducanu said: “Afterwards I sent him a long message basically: ‘If I caused any trouble I guess at Wimbledon, that's definitely the last thing I want’.

"He's someone that I've grown up looking up to and I don't want any bad blood or harsh feelings with him. I sent him a long message and he took it really well and responded saying he was disappointed but he understood. We're fine now.

"We walk past each other and say 'hello', 'well done'. It's obviously really cool seeing him with Novak here as well. Two great champions and they're just together, it's pretty awesome. Afterwards I sent him a long message basically apologising if I caused any trouble I guess at Wimbledon, that's definitely the last thing I want.

“Did I want to to take the initiative and smooth things over? Yeah, big time. I really wanted to [smooth things over]. Whether or not I can go back and turn back time and do things differently, that's in the past.

"All I can do is kind of evaluate that and learn going forwards. And I wanted to take the initiative, because growing up, he was one of my idols, and he still is, with everything he's achieved in the game, coming from the UK and the same system and everything.

"He's someone I respect a lot, and I just didn't want any negative tension in the air, more than anything, because I'm going to see him around. I just didn't want that. It didn't feel right, so I texted him and he replied, and it was like a really nice message. So I'm glad I did that and I just hope he doesn't hate me too much!”

Raducanu added: “I saw Andy today, and he said, Well done, and congratulated me. That was really nice. He's someone that I look up to a lot. So it's good to have that pat on the back from him.

"I haven't seen him, actually, since. Maybe once at the NTC saying: ‘Hello’."
