Liverpool alerted as Borussia Dortmund plotting Bellingham trick with Slot's forgotten man | Football | Sport

Borussia Dortmund are set to try and lure another young English talent following the stunning success of Jude Bellingham’s stint in Germany. The midfield star was just 17 when he joined from Birmingham City, and proceeded to play 132 times for them in three seasons.

During that spell, Bellingham helped Dortmund to a DFB-Pokal Cup win and became an England international, before earning himself an £86million move to Real Madrid.

And he’s not the only English success story to play in front of the ‘yellow wall’, with Jadon Sancho also establishing himself at the club before moving to Manchester United, only to return to Dortmund on loan last season.

And now the Bundesliga side are reportedly targeting Liverpool player Harvey Elliott. The 21-year-old, considered a huge prospect at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp, has found himself frozen out since the appointment of Arne Slot.

The winger has only started one game this season, the Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Southampton. Aside from that, he’s made just eight substitute appearances, and was an unused substitute for the defeat at Tottenham on Wednesday.

Fitness issues haven’t helped the England Under-21 international, with a foot injury also ruling him out for several weeks. But Slot’s apparent reluctance to trust him in his starting XI has led to fresh doubts on his future.

And according to Sky Sports News, Dortmund are now closely monitoring the situation. Brighton are also said to be tracking the player, who has made 128 senior appearances for the Reds since joining from Fulham in 2019.

Only this week, Elliott opened up on his recent lack of game time. And he acknowledged the onus was on him to perform when chances to play do come his way under his Dutch manager.

“It’s not going to be easy at all,” he told The Times. “It’s just about waiting for my moment, my opportunities and trying to take them with everything I have. On top of that, when I do get brought in, whether it’s as a sub or wherever I start, I just want to try to contribute for the team and be the best possible player I can.”

Back in 2022, Elliott signed a five-year extension to his deal at Liverpool. At the time, he had broken into the first-team under Klopp following an impressive loan spell with Blackburn Rovers in the 2020/21 campaign.

Dortmund currently lie sixth in the Bundesliga, having reached the final of the Champions League last season. But the club continues to be lauded for it’s policy of discovering young talent, with Elliott appearing to fit their model of putting faith in young players.
