How to clean oven without 'scrubbing vigorously' - no harsh chemicals

If  Christmas dinner has left your oven looking less than sparkling and your wallet is a little thin from the festive period, don’t panic - you can spruce up your oven using two items you probably already have in the kitchen.

Keeping your oven clean is extremely important as a Thomas Sanderson survey has revealed that Brits only wipe down their ovens every 18 months, while another study found that 2 percent don't clean them at all.

However, grease build-up and burnt food can be a hot spot for  bacteria to multiply, making your food less hygienic and causing illnesses.

Supermarket experts at Britsuperstore are advising Brits to clean their oven using a simple mix of sodium bicarbonate and hot water, and then using aluminium foil to scrub it away.

Supermarket Expert Richard Price says: "Cleaning oven doors can be challenging because food splatters and grease often bake onto the surface, making the stains difficult to remove, even after scrubbing vigorously.

"If it’s been a while since you last cleaned your oven, it is important to start doing it now.

"This is because built-up grease and burn marks create the perfect environment for bacteria, compromising kitchen hygiene and the safety of your cooking.

"Using sodium bicarbonate is an easy and effective way to clean the oven, with great results in just three minutes, making it ideal for a last-minute cleaning chore.”

How to clean your oven with two ingredients:

Pour hot water onto the oven door: open your oven and pour enough hot water (not building) to coat the door without it spilling over the sides.

Sprinkle the door with baking soda until its covered and let it sit for 30 seconds.

Create a cleaning paste with aluminium foil, by scrunching it into a ball and rubbing it over the mic in gentle circular motions to create a paste.

Wipe away the paste with a damp cloth. Use a clean cloth and a spray bottle filled with water to remove any streaks, and dry the glass with a paper towel for a streak-free finish.
