Switch 2 can finally be revealed after shocking Nintendo milestone | Gaming | Entertainment

The Nintendo Switch 2 is gaming's biggest mystery. We know Nintendo is working on a new console and that it will almost certainly launch in 2025, but we don't know when it will be announced, we don't have a dedicated release date, and technically we don't even know what it will be called!

There's absolutely nothing holding Nintendo back from making the announcement, especially as the original Switch passes a shocking new sales milestone.

Indeed, based on the latest sales figures, the Nintendo Switch has finally overtaken the legendary PlayStation 2 in North America.

According to Circana’s Mat Piscatella on BlueSky, the Nintendo Switch has now sold 46.6 million units in the US.

"Lifetime unit sales of Nintendo Switch have now exceeded those of PlayStation 2 in the U.S. market," reads a new post by Piscatella.

"With its 46.6 million units sold life-to-date, Switch now ranks 2nd in all-time units sold across all video game hardware platforms in the U.S., trailing only Nintendo DS."

The PS2 is believed to have sold around 46.5 million units in the US, while the DS has sold an estimated 53.8 million.

While it seems unlikely the Switch will catch up to the DS, there's enough time to put even more distance between the Nintendo console and PlayStation 2.

With few other records to topple or milestones to achieve, there's really no time like the present to unveil the Switch 2.

One Reddit user claims to have a unit and has promised to leak the Switch 2 over Christmas.

The user believes the console will be officially revealed in January, before hinting that Mario Kart 9 is one of the games in development.

The new console is reportedly larger than the current model, with a smaller bezel for more screen space.

Perhaps to give it more universal appeal, it's said to feature a black and white colour scheme, not too dissimilar to the PS5, Xbox Series X and Series S.

There's a good chance the upcoming Metroid Prime sequel could launch as a cross-generation title for both the Switch and its successor.

Nintendo has done this with games like Twilight Princess back on the Gamecube and Wii, as well as Breath of the Wild on the Wii U and Nintendo Switch.

Speaking of Breath of the Wild, there are reports that Nintendo showcased the power of the Switch 2 with a demo for the highly-rated Legend of Zelda release.

The Switch 2 version featured enhanced visuals, and was reportedly running at 60 frames-per-second in 4K.
