West Ham United striker Michail Antonio is set to be sidelined for at least a year after breaking his leg in a horror car accident on Saturday afternoon, according to reports. The 34-year-old underwent surgery later in the day, having been airlifted to hospital after crashing his Ferrari in Essex.

West Ham have confirmed that Antonio's condition is stable and has been conscious and communicating since the frightening incident.

But it is considered almost certain that the club's record Premier League goalscorer won't play again this season amid fears over his potential recovery timeline.

According to the Guardian, Antonio is expected to be out of action for at least a year. That rehabilitation period is viewed as a best-case scenario.

The Jamaica forward's contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and it remains to be seen whether the car crash could lead to an early retirement.

West Ham signed Antonio from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth around £7million in 2015, and he has since scored 83 goals in 323 appearances.

Antonio has started 11 of the Hammers' 14 Premier League games this season and would've been in line to face Wolves on Monday night.

But his entire focus will now be on the road to recovery after going through the life-threatening ordeal.

"West Ham United can confirm Michail Antonio has undergone surgery on a lower limb fracture following a road traffic accident on Saturday afternoon," a club spokesperson said post-operation.

"Michail will continue to be monitored in hospital over the coming days.

"Everyone at the club wishes Michail a speedy recovery and wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the football family at large for the overwhelming support shown since yesterday's news, as well as extending a heartfelt thank you to the emergency services and first responders who attended to Michail in the immediate aftermath of the incident, and the medical team who continue to aid him in his recovery.

"The club will provide further updates when appropriate."

Meanwhile, Essex police have published a request for any further information about the collision.

A statement read: "Officers investigating a serious collision in Epping are asking for witnesses and dash cam footage.

"We were called shortly after 12.50pm on Saturday, 7 December, to Coppice Row, Epping, following reports of what is believed to be a single-vehicle collision involving a Ferrari.

"Emergency services attended and the driver has been taken to hospital. The vehicle has been recovered, and we are no longer on scene."
