Brussels sprouts are a beloved (and sometimes controversial) vegetable that often steals the show at Christmas dinner.

So, this year, if you’re including them in your Christmas feast, you might want to take note of an expert’s simple storage hack that makes all the difference.

Adding just one step to your usual routine when putting away your vegetables will ensure your Brussels spouts stay fresh and flavourful for longer.

For individual sprouts, storage expert Vlatka Lake from Space Station suggested storing them in the same bag they came in or placing them in a bowl covered with cling film.

"Make sure to add a few holes for ventilation," she told Express.co.uk exclusively.

"Then, store them in a draw in the fridge where they will stay fresh for up to two weeks."

However, she recommends buying Brussels sprouts still attached to the stalk, as this natural source of hydration helps preserve their freshness.

“If you can get them on the stalk, that's the best option," she said, explaining that this method ensures the sprouts retain their moisture and last longer.

"Place the whole stalk in a plastic bag and store it in the fridge," the storage expert added.

It’s also important to be aware of Brussels sprouts' sensitivity to ethylene, a gas emitted by some fruits like apples and bananas.

"Brussels sprouts produce a small amount of ethylene themselves, so when exposed to more, they can turn yellow and spoil more quickly," Lake warned.

Keeping them separate from other ethylene-producing produce will help them stay fresh and vibrant for longer.
