Teenage sprint star Gout Gout shatters historic 200m Australian record | Athletics

One of Australian sport’s most famous records has fallen, with Gout Gout breaking Peter Norman’s 200m national record at the Australian All-Schools Championships in Brisbane.

At just 16, the Queenslander reinforced his standing as one of the world’s most exciting sprinters with a jaw-dropping 20.04s over 200m on Saturday.

The number at the forefront of everyone’s minds was Norman’s national record 20.06s, set at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics when the silver medallist stood on the dais in support of Tommie Smith and John Carlos as they gave a black-power salute.

Gout had already set stratospheric expectations when he claimed silver at the world under-20s championships in August in a time of 20.60, then lowered his personal best to 20.29 at the Queensland All Schools Championships.

On Friday he electrified the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre track with a wind-assisted 10.04 in his 100m heat.
