Excitement has been building up ahead of Princess Kate's 'Together at Christmas' carol service, which will be held tonight.

Invites were sent out earlier in the week for 1,600 guests who are due to arrive at Westminster Abbey, as they received a personal and highly emotional message written for the first time by Kate.

Combining traditional and modern elements to encompass people of all faiths and none, the service will see the world-renowned Westminster Abbey choir perform some of the nation’s most beloved carols, alongside musical performances too.

Princess Kate's Together At Christmas Carol service, launched in 2021. Members of the wider Royal Family are expected to attend, as it marks a significant milestone for the future Queen who is easing herself back into royal life after completing her chemotherapy treatment.

The event will be broadcast as part of Royal Carols: Together At Christmas, a special programme, airing on ITV1 and ITVX on Christmas Eve.

Princess Kate's 'Together at Christmas' carol service will take place at Westminster Abbey on Friday 6 December. It is an event spearheaded by the Princess of Wales and supported by The Royal Foundation.

The service aims to shine a light on individuals from all over the UK who have shown love, kindness and empathy towards others in their communities.

Westminster Abbey will be filled with 1,600 people who have supported others in their communities, whether on a personal level with friends and family, through their work, or as they selflessly give up their time through volunteering.

The event will be broadcast as part of Royal Carols: Together At Christmas, a special programme, airing at on ITV1 and ITVX on Christmas Eve. The broadcast will feature three special films, bringing to life the stories of people and organisations who have inspired, counselled and comforted others in their times of need.

Earlier this month, it was confirmed the theme of this year's event would be "how much we need each other, especially in the most difficult times of our lives".

In Princess Kate's personal letter, the theme of love could not be any clearer, as she appears to repeat a sentiment she shared earlier in the year when addressing her own cancer diagnosis - "Love is the light that can shine bright, even in our darkest times."

In Kate's letter, she also wrote how Christmas was one of her "favourite times" of the year, and a celebration of "joy", but also gave the opportunity to "reflect".

It comes after the princess announced she had finished her chemotherapy treatment and Prince William described how "brutal" the past year has been, with both his wife's and father's health battles.

Combining traditional and modern elements to encompass people of all faiths and none, the service will see the world-renowned Westminster Abbey choir perform some of the nation’s most beloved carols, alongside musical performances by guests including Olivia Dean, Gregory Porter, Paloma Faith and JP Cooper, as well as a specially composed piece by pianist Rosey Chan.

Guests will also watch a specially curated performance by two Soloists from The Royal Ballet and students from The Royal Ballet School.

During the service, poignant readings linked to the theme of love and empathy will be delivered by speakers including The Prince of Wales, Olympian Adam Peaty OBE, Sophie Okonedo CBE, Michelle Dockery and Richard E. Grant. Alongside this, candles will be lit by notable people linked to the theme including Lindsey Burrow, Sir Chris Hoy MBE, and teammate Paralympians Lizzi Jordan and Danni Khan.

Princess Kate is expected to be supported by her husband, Prince William, and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

King Charles and Queen Camilla are also expected to be present alongside Princess Anne and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence despite their recent busy calendars.

Princess Beatrice and Eugenie are expected to attend with their families. Last year, Beatrice's stepson 'Wolfie' also made an appearance.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are also expected to attend the event today.

Nodding to the importance of nature as a source of healing and comfort, the Abbey will be adorned with sustainable, festive decorations and foliage, providing a beautiful Christmas backdrop for the Service.

This year a ‘Kindness Tree’ will be situated outside the Abbey for guests to dedicate a decoration to someone who has supported them throughout their life, highlighting the importance of empathy, love and kindness.
