The 'best' supermarket for Christmas food has been named

Research from consumer champions Which? has revealed which supermarket is the best place for Christmas food this year.

In a survey of more than 8,000 Which? members, respondents in January 2024, were asked where they would recommend based on taste, quality and value for money on Christmas food essentials, such as stuffing, turkey, pigs in blankets and vegetables.

Leading retailers including Tesco, Asda, Lidl, Waitrose, Aldi, Morrisons, M&S and Sainsbury's were then compared.

However, one supermarket stood out from the rest, with Aldi coming in the top as the ‘best place to shop’.

The retailer achieved an impressive score of 84 percent to take first place, beating the likes of Marks & Spencer at 82 percent, Waitrose at 80 percent and Lidl at 78 percent.

This means Aldi is the best place to buy Christmas dinner essentials, for the second year in a row.

Aldi also came out as the top scoring supermarket in three food subcategories, making it the best supermarket for pigs in blankets, stuffing and fresh vegetables

Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, said: “We’re thrilled to be recognised by Which? as the best place to buy Christmas essentials, for the second year in a row!

“This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teams, who are committed to delivering great value, quality, and service to our shoppers.

"Christmas is a special time for many, and we’re proud to help families across the UK make the most of their festive celebrations, all while keeping their budgets in check.”

It comes as consumer champion Which? has compared major supermarket prices to reveal the cheapest in October 2024. Researchers compared the cost of groceries with Aldi coming top thanks to an average basket of 62 items costing £11.66.

This is the 12th month in a row in which Aldi has come top of the pile, making them only the second supermarket to do so.

In second place was Lidl with the same basket of goods costing £112.07 and £112.33 for Plus members and non-members.

Overall, Waitrose was the most expensive retailer, with a total basket of the same 62 groceries costing £142.39. This is £30.71 more than those shopping at Aldi with the same items.
