Make simple toffee apples this autumn which ‘taste so much better’ than supermarket ones

Toffee apples are typically associated with autumn, around Halloween and bonfire night.

Simple, but effective, toffee apples are a delicious treat for the entire family.

Whilst you can buy them from the store, it’s a fun activity to do at home on a spare afternoon.

This recipe from BBC Good Food makes eight apples and is ready in under 10 minutes.

The notes said: “Nothing beats the crunch of a toffee apple on a crisp autumnal evening, and these taste so much better than shop-bought.”

Ingredients:

Eight Granny Smith apples

400g golden caster sugar

One teaspoon vinegar

Four tablespoons of golden syrup

Method:

Place the apples in a large bowl, then cover with boiling water to help remove the waxy coating.

Dry thoroughly and twist off the stalks, pushing a wooden skewer or lolly stick into the stalk end of each apple.

Lay out baking parchment and place the apples on this before tipping the sugar into a pan with 100ml of water.

Cook for five minutes until the sugar has dissolved, then stir in the syrup and vinegar.

Set a sugar thermometer in the pan and boil to 150C. If you don’t have one, you can test the toffee by pouring some into cold water.

It should instantly harden and when removed, be brittle enough to break.

Working quickly and carefully, dip and twist each apple in the hot toffee until covered, then place on the parking parchment to harden.

Leave the toffee to cool before eating and enjoy the delicious apple.

These can be made up to two days in advance, storing them in a dry place.
