Sainsbury's, Tesco and Morrisons issue food warning over listeria and metal

Unilever has recalled The Magnum Classic Ice Cream Sticks (3x100ml), which are sold in major supermarkets including Sainsbury's and Tesco, because they could contain pieces of metal, and the possible presence makes the ice creams "unsafe to eat".

The company has issued an urgent warning and point of sale notices have been displayed in all supermarkets and other stores selling the product.

The Food Standards Agency has shared its advice saying: "If you have bought the above product do not eat it." Instead, shoppers with queries or concerns should contact the careline team on 08006781031 for further guidance.

Magnum said: "The safety of people who buy and use our products is always our number one priority which is why we are recalling these products.

"No other Magnum products are affected - we apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your co-operation."

The FSA explained that symptoms caused by Listeria can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea. However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.

They added: "Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems."
