Retro game gathering dust on your shelf could be worth £300 | Gaming | Entertainment

I always get annoyed when I see the amount of cash some retro video games are selling for in 2024, especially when I used to have the title in question.

My latest gaming regret is Dreamcast shooter Cannon Spike, which was the final game to release on the doomed SEGA console in Europe. (At least until indie developers started revisiting the Dreamcast in more recent times.)

The game is a top-down multi-directional shooter which famously features various Capcom characters such as Cammy from Street Fighter. It's not a particularly revolutionary game, but it's a fun arcade style shooter that feels unmistakenly Dreamcast (if that makes sense).

The fact that it launched when the Dreamcast was as good as dead has seen the title skyrocket in value over the years, to the point where it now sells for around £300 on sites like eBay.

A boxed version has just sold for £300 on the auction site, while a separate listing is advertising a complete version for a whopping £499.99.

Even high-street retailer CEX will pay you £240 for a mint copy, or £200 for a boxed version without a manual.

I had no idea Cannon Spike was considered such a rarity, which makes me think there must be other people out there who don't realise how much money they can make from their old games.

Other Dreamcast games selling for big money at CEX include MoHo, Samba De Amigo, Evolution 2: Far Off Promise and Project Justice: Rival Schools 2 (I'm sure I had this as well!).

You can also bag more than £100 for games like Evil Twin Cyprien's Chronicles, Dragon Riders: Chronicles of Pern and Freestyle Scooter.

Likewise, games such as Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Sonic Shuffle, Street Fighter 3: Double Impact are also worth quite a bit of cash.

Needless to say, you'll get more money for a mint copy, and if the game comes withe the manual and any bonus discs.

It's also worth trying to sell on eBay if you can, especially now that the site doesn't charge listing fees.
