Met Office warns 'explosive' wind and rain storms to batter UK | Weather | News

The Met Office has warned heavy rainstorms and stormy winds are set to batter the UK 'explosively' in the coming days.

In a post on X, it said: “An area of low pressure is expected to 'explosively' deepen as it crosses the jet stream and this will bring a period of stormy weather to parts of the British Isles on Sunday.”

It also issued a warning for winds, it said: “With strong winds forecast later this week in some areas, stay safe if you are at the coast: stay away from cliff edges, stay back from stormy seas, waves can sweep you off your feet, if you see someone in trouble, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”

This comes after temperatures were on the rise this week but as we look towards the weekend, developments in the Atlantic Ocean may mean stormier skies.

From Friday 18 October, the weather will begin to get wetter. While Friday will be dry for most, strong winds in the north and west will be felt.

If you are living in a coastal area, there may be some impact as we continue to the weekend. The Met Office has issued a Yellow National Severe Weather Warning for wind on Friday.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly said: “A period of strong south to southeasterly winds is likely across western Scotland on Friday morning into the early afternoon, before easing and turning southwesterly through the afternoon.

“Wind gusts of 45-55mph are possible fairly widely for a time, and perhaps in excess of 60mph in more exposed locations. Given the wind direction and high spring tides, some disruption is possible.”

Temperatures will be normal or just above average but by Sunday, stormy weather is likely.

Maps from WXCharts show an area of low pressure which will arrive from the Atlantic. At present, it is not yet known what impact this will have or the strength of the low pressure as it passes over the weekend. There may be some disruption caused.
