Reform UK candidate raises fears over ‘pay per mile, 20mph zones and ULEZ extension’

Reform UK candidate Howard Cox has warned that “pay-per-mile” car tax charges, 20mph speed limit zones and more Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) could be on the horizon for motorists in the UK.

The FairFuelUK founder has claimed Labour could develop “all three anti-driver policies” if they win July’s election.

Mr Cox also called out the Conservative Party after the Tories announced a string of measures aimed directly at motorists yesterday afternoon.

The party promised to tackle ULEZ and never implement pay-per-mile schemes but Howard suggested their actions were “way too late”.

Mr Cox stood for Reform UK in the London Mayoral election against Mr Khan and is seeking the Parliamentary constituency of Dover and Deal this time around.

Posting on social media site X last night, Mr Cox explained: “Tory transport minister @Mark_J_Harper could have done this last year but it is now way too late.

“Dropping pay per mile, 20mph zones and London’s ULEZ extension are welcome words from him but it's just electioneering.

“But Sadly I am very reliably informed that @UKLabour will develop all three of these anti-driver policies when they get the keys to number 10.

“Along with hiking fuel duty, life for the motorist under Starmer will be miserable and costly.”

The Conservatives revealed they would introduce a bill through Parliament which would prevent the introduction of pay-per-mile fees.

They have also promised to unilaterally reverse” the expansion of ULEZ schemes in London.

They posted on X: “Labour in power means they would be free to make us all pay for driving. Don’t hand Labour a blank cheque.”

Labour and the Conservatives are yet to release their manifestos which will likely include further details around their motoring pledges.

However, London Mayor Sadiq Khan made clear he would not introduce a road pricing structure in London ahead of May's Mayoral contest.

Labour introduced 20mph zones in Wales but has since u-turned on the move with some routes returning to 30mph from September.

On ULEZ, back in April former Labour leader and shadow energy secretary Ed Milliband said the party was now “fully behind” the scheme.

Back in March, Labour blocked Tory MP Gareth Bacon’s bill to overturn ULEZ from advancing in Parliament.

However, they have since called out the Conservative’s latest pledges before stressing the party would support motorists across the UK.

A Labour spokesperson said: “This is desperate stuff from a Government that has run out of road. The Conservatives' abysmal record on drivers is there for everyone to see. Britain has 100 times more potholes than craters on the moon and car insurance costs are out-of-control.

“Labour is on the side of drivers. We will tackle rip-off car insurance costs and break down planning barriers to ensure transport infrastructure is delivered and delivered on time.”
