Two Premier League players 'suspended by club' after 'arrests over alleged rape' | Football | Sport

Two footballers arrested on suspicion of rape have been suspended by their Premier League club after being released on bail, according to reports. The players, who are said to play for the same team, were arrested last weekend after an alleged rape was reported to police.

It was reported by The Sun that police officers swooped on the club's stadium to speak with one player in a private room. He was allowed to leave the stadium with another individual following a brief interview and was later arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape.

The player reportedly spent the night in custody before he was interviewed by police detectives under caution. Another player was said to have been arrested the following day and questioned by police on suspicion of rape.

Both players were released on bail pending further enquiries and have since been suspended by their club, according to a new report by The Sun.

The club in question are thought to be in conversation about taking the appropriate 'next steps'. A spokesperson for the unnamed Premier League club said: "As the matter is now in the hands of the police, the football club will not be making further comment at this stage."

Meanwhile, a police spokesperson added: "Officers have arrested two men following a report of a rape. A man was arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape.

"A second man was arrested on suspicion of rape. Both men have since been released on police bail."

The report states the alleged victim contacted police a few hours after the alleged incident, which is said to have taken place on Friday. A formal complaint was also filed before the two players were arrested, questioned and released on bail.
