Wimbledon to determine Andy Murray's future as Brit mulls over tennis retirement | Tennis | Sport

Andy Murray’s performance at Wimbledon will determine his playing future, according to Mats Wilander. The Scot suffered a crushing straight sets defeat to Stan Wawrinka in the first round of the French Open and then waved goodbye to the singles at Roland Garros.

Before the match, the 2016 finalist here had insisted he has yet to make a decision over his retirement this summer. “When the time is right, I will stop,” he said. "I don’t know if I will play past the summer.”

Murray, 37, recovered from ruptured ankle ligaments in March and played here with a new Yonex racquet but he has still to win three matches at a Grand Slam since his title defence at the 2017 Wimbledon ended in the quarter-finals.

But Eurosport analyst Wilander said he shouldn’t be judged on playing on his least favourite surface clay - and he could be better on the grass at Wimbledon. “I love that he [Murray] changed his racquet, I think he was hitting his forehand harder,” said the Swedish legend.

“But it wasn't a good match-up for him on clay, it never was against Stan Wawrinka and it will most probably always be like that. Wimbledon is Andy's best chance at having one last good Grand Slam tournament, maybe getting to the quarters or even the semis.

“He's played good there the last couple of years. But this is easily the most difficult surface to play on, the clay when you get older, because you have to take that extra step.

“I think this summer is unbelievably important, Wimbledon, the Olympics - can he get there? But Roland Garros next year, I'd be very, very doubtful. But I think it all depends on Wimbledon, if he can play well there, why not play for another couple of years?”

Murray still plans to play in the French Open doubles with Dan Evans - as a preparation for the Olympics here later in the summer - despite struggling on the clay.

“Physically tennis is not easy for me nowadays,” he said. “It's hard, and clay has always been a surface that since the very beginning of my career I've had back issues on, you know, on the clay, and it's something I'm sort of used to, to be honest.

”It had been a bit of a struggle to sort of in the training and in the buildup, but I felt pretty good going into the match tonight, considering. And yeah, it wasn't much of a factor out there this evening, to be honest. Hopefully I'll be fine for the doubles.”

After the clay season, the world No.75 will play the Boss Open in Stuttgart from June 10 and then the Cinch Championships at Queen’s Club the following week before Wimbledon on July 1.

“Yeah, that's the plan just now,” Murray said. “It's always difficult, when you come back from or when you're coming back from an injury to get everything right. My ankle feels really good.

“But then you also need matches, and obviously time on the practice court, and not just have the ankle feel good but the rest of the body as well. When you're 37, it's also not the same as when you're 21.

“You bounce back much, much quicker. Sometimes now, like, when you do have an injury it just takes a little bit longer for your body to get used to the intensity of the matches and stuff.

“My body isn't what it was, you know, 10 years ago. I'm fully aware of that. It takes a lot of time and effort to get it in a position to go out there and compete. It's not always perfect. But it is what it is, and I still enjoy giving a go and trying to get myself out there and be as competitive as possible.”
