Scottie Scheffler video in handcuffs as police say 'he's going to jail' | Golf | Sport

New footage has emerged of world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler being detained by police on his way to the second day of the PGA Championship. A Louisville police officer was captured claiming that the 27-year-old was "going to jail" following a traffic incident in the early hours of Friday morning.

Footage captured by ESPN saw Scheffler taken away into a police car in handcuffs, before an officer came over the media and explained: “Here’s the thing. Right now, right now, he’s going to jail, OK, and there ain’t nothing you can do about it. Period. There’s nothing you can do about it.”

Scheffler was then charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic according to an arrest citation for the incident near Valhalla Golf Club.

The American golfer was officially booked at 7.28am local time on Friday morning when he was en route to the course, having driven past a police car during a traffic cordon.

A misunderstanding regarding traffic flow reportedly caused the officer to attach themselves to Scheffler's car as he drove to the golf club, where the officer's entry was blocked.

The officer had screamed at the Masters champion to get out of his car, a request he obliged, before being put up against the vehicle and detained. Scheffler has since arrived back at Valhalla under an hour before his tee time, ready to take to the links again.

Scheffler has since been released and was promptly given a 13:48 tee time alongside Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman, less than six hours on from him detaining by police.

However, the start of the second day's action was delayed due to an incident that saw a man killed by a shuttle bus near the course.

Louisville Metro Police Department released a statement which read: "About 5:00 this morning, the LMPD responded to a call of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian and a bus.

"Our preliminary investigation found that an adult male pedestrian was crossing Shelbyville Road south to north when he was struck by a shuttle bus that was travelling eastbound in the compulsory centre lane dedicated for buses. As a result, the pedestrian received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. The LMPD Traffic Unit is investigating."
