Reigning Wimbledon men's doubles champion Henry Patten has released a statement after he was hit with a Β£9,000 fine for verbally abusing staff. The world No. 3 did not complete post-match media duties on Monday and has now spoken out on his financial penalty, confirming that he has appealed the fine and been advised not to speak about it.
Patten, who is back into the quarter-finals here with Harri Heliovaara after their fairytale win 12 months ago, has made it clear that he isn't happy with the All England Club for making his fine public without disclosing his appeal.
Ahead of his first match last week, Patten had been ordered to pay Β£9k - the biggest fine of the tournament so far - for verbally abusing staff when one of his practice sessions was cut short.
The 29-year-old has now shared his side of the story in a strong statement, claiming Wimbledon had not "acted reasonably or fairly".
It read: "There was an incident that occurred on the 29th of June during a training session on an offsite training ground. The next day, I spoke to the tournament referee and tournament director regarding this incident.
"On the 2nd of July I received a letter informing me that I had been fined and on the same day I responded appealing the decision due to inaccuracies and procedural failures in the process.
"Despite this decision being under appeal, I am disappointed that Wimbledon thought it appropriate to disclose this fine to the media without indicating my appeal which creates an unfair and inaccurate perception of the incident.
"As this decision is subject to appeal, I have been advised not to speak about this in any detail at this point. At this stage I will merely say that I do not believe that there has been a full or proper investigation, nor has Wimbledon acted reasonably or fairly with due process.
"I am disappointed that as the defending maleβs doubles champion that I am having to address this matter at this point rather than concentrating on playing tennis.
"I will comment further once the appeal has been concluded."
Patten and his Finnish partner Heliovaara are through to the quarter-final of the men's doubles draw here. They received a walkover on Monday when Jordan Thompson and Pierre-Hughues Herbert pulled out of their match.
Thompson had retired from his singles contest with Taylor Fritz on Sunday. He then withdrew from the doubles citing an adductor strain secondary to known lower back pain.
Patten and Heliovaara will face the all-British pairing of Lloyd Glasspool and Julian Cash on Wednesday. Glasspool and Cash have been on a tear, winning back-to-back titles in Queen's and Eastbourne.
