Motorists have been told to “carefully consider” one item before getting into their cars and off on journeys this weekend. Slipping on casual footwear including Crocs, sliders and flip-flops may appear harmless in hot weather. 

However, these shoes could be considered inappropriate footwear with motorists not in proper control of their vehicles. Shoes that don’t fit correctly could see motorists accidentally slip on the throttle pedal or brake pedal in a serious safety issue. Rob Marshall, Company Director of Gateway2Lease stressed road users had to take this into account before leaving home to avoid hefty fines.

He said: “We’re advising that all motorists should carefully consider their choice of footwear when out and about on British roads this summer.

“Ensuring that you’re in control of your vehicle, whilst being on the right side of the law, means that you, your passengers and your bank balance are safe.”

Experts stressed that motorists could find themselves penalised for “driving without care and attention” which has a maximum fine of £5,000 and nine penalty points.

Meanwhile, motorists could be caught out for “not being in proper control” of a vehicle which comes with a maximum fine of £1,000.

Motorists will also be slapped with nine penalty points on their driving licence which could be a serious blow for individuals already closing in on the 12 point threshold.

The hot weather is set to continue with meteorologists saying temperatures in London will remain around 26C for most of next week.

According to the RAC, motorists should follow a series of basic guidelines when choosing their footwear.

Shoes should have a sole no thicker than 10mm but the sole should not be too thin or soft.

Shoes should also provide enough grip to stop your foot slipping off the pedals.

Any footwear should not be too heavy, not limit ankle movement and still be narrow enough to avoid accidentally pressing down on two pedals at once.

The Highway Code reads: “Drivers must ensure their footwear does not hinder their ability to operate vehicle controls safely and effectively.”
