The UK is set to bask in soaring temperarures over the coming days, with many households looking to make the most out of the hot weather.

Unfortunately the summer enjoyment comes with an influx of small pests that force their way through opened windows and doors, to invade homes. According to the British Pest Control Association, local councils across the UK have carried out more than 20,000 ant-related treatments in a year. A few ants in a home can quickly turn into hundreds or even thousands if not dealt with. However professional pest control services can be costly, with an inital visit potentially setting you back a minimum of £165. On top of that, additional treatments can cost around £60 each time.

Instead of forking out hundreds, Glen Peskett, DIY expert at Saxton Baldes, says there's an easy method that will help banish ants from your home and save you some money, and all it takes is using one simple thing that is most likely already in your kitchen.

While many might reach for the vinegar, Glen revealed something else.

He said: "Lemon juice is a brilliant natural ant repellent.

"The strong citrus scent disrupts their scent trails, and the acidity interferes with the pheromones they use to navigate. Just squeeze fresh lemon juice around door frames, windowsills, or anywhere you've seen ants coming in."

The natural method has two benefits - it redirects ants away from your property, whilst giving your home a nice fresh smelling scent. The use of this cheap trick to keep ants out couldn't be more simple.

All you need to do is cut a fresh lemon and squeeze the juice into a small bowl or directly onto a cloth or cotton pad. Wipe the juice around known entry points such as cracks, windowsills, doorframes, skirting boards, and under sinks.

For extra strength, you can mix the lemon juice with water and spray along trails where ants may enter.

Just like that, this easy yet effective trick will help keep your home ant-free without burning a hole in your pocket, meaning you can enjoy the sunshine without worrying about an infestation.
