Gardeners urged to squirt soap over plants

Watching your  plants thrive with vibrant, healthy growth is one of the most rewarding experiences for any gardener. However, the use of insecticides can sometimes weaken their condition, and among the most troublesome threats is an aphid infestation.

But, gardening experts have suggested a homemade repellent that can keep the insects away. According to the experts, squirting soap over plants helps to keep aphids at bay. Experts from BigGreen Smile said: “If you are struggling with an aphid infestation, however, try diluting a squirt of eco-friendly washing up liquid or Mulieres Multi-Purpose Cleaner in a bottle of water and spraying it over the affected area.”

The gardening experts explained the science behind using soapy water for plants. Experts from garden therapy said that soapy water is believed to wash off some of the insects' protective coating on their bodies, causing them to dry out.

They said: “Soapy water for aphids is one of the most common uses, but it also works on other soft-bodied insects like whiteflies, thrips, and mites. However, it doesn’t work on larger pests like caterpillars and beetles. But this also means it is safe for most pollinators and large insects!

“I use dish soap (castile soap) in my pest deterrent spray. It makes the concoction stick to the insect or the animal, helping to keep them away from your plants. True dish soap (castile soap) works best when you directly spray the insect. It won’t be as effective if you’re spraying the plant, and we want to avoid getting soap on the plant as much as possible not to damage it. Turn over the leaves and coat the insects only as best as you can.”

  • Slice a few cloves of garlic
  • Add the slices to a pan of boiling water and simmer for 20 minutes
  • Allow to cool
  • Pour the water into a spray bottle through a sieve
  • Add a squirt of Dr Bronner’s Castile Soap
  • Shake to mix
  • Spray onto roses and other plants every few days

Aphids loathe the smell of garlic, so they should stay well away. The same spray should also help to deter caterpillars and ants.
