Newcastle announce first summer signing on free transfer as star breaks silence | Football | Sport

Newcastle have announced the signing of Spain Under-19 winger Antonio Cordero from Malaga.

The 18-year-old will join the Magpies on July 1 following the expiry of his contract with the Spanish club.

Cordero registered seven goals and nine assists in 60 senior appearances for Malaga, who finished 16th in the Segunda Division last season following promotion from the third tier.

Cordero said: "It's truly an honour to be here, truly a pleasure. I have a great desire to get going already. I am a person who likes to aspire high. Why not come to one of the best places in the world to do it?"

Magpies sporting director Paul Mitchell added: "Antonio is an exciting talent. We're delighted to bring him to Newcastle United amidst interest in Spain and across Europe."

Cordero is expected to be loaned out after completing his move to St James' Park.
