How to remove mould from silicone sealants fast without bleach

The unassuming white rubbery substance of silicone seal is essential for keeping water away from sinks, showers, and bathtubs, but can be notoriously difficult to get looking like new when mould appears without the correct cleaner. Mould may not directly grow on the waterproof sealant, but lingering moisture in any indentations or fractures can lead to mould outbreaks from behind the fixtures, eventually emerging onto the surface.

The challenge in eradicating bathroom mould lies in finding a cleaner that can deeply infiltrate the texture of silicone sealant without inflicting harm. Mould Solutions specialists have shared an eco-friendly, yet potent method for removing any traces of mould from your sealant in a mere 10 minutes. Their recommendation is to use hydrogen peroxide, which is an environmentally friendly way to get rid of mould.

This liquid solution, made up of hydrogen and oxygen, might be renowned as an antiseptic, but it also boasts remarkable mould-busting capabilities thanks to its antibacterial elements.

Hydrogen peroxide easily penetrates porous surfaces, whereas some other mould treatments, such as bleach, do not.

This allows the solution to remove any traces of mould contained beneath the surface.

For this method, start by carefully decanting the liquid into an unused spray bottle, followed by securing the cap tightly.

Generously spray hydrogen peroxide onto the mouldy silicone seal, then let it sit for 10 minutes to allow it to break down the mould spores.

After the time has elapsed, use a stiff-bristled cleaning brush to scrub the silicone sealant briefly, and the mould should wipe off easily.

Once cleaned, ensure you thoroughly dry the silicone with a clean cloth, and your silicone sealant should be entirely clean.

To prevent future mould growth on silicone sealant, make sure to open a window to release steam and wipe down the area post-shower.

Since mould thrives in damp areas, taking a few extra minutes to ensure the silicone is dry will help prevent moisture or mould from becoming a problem in your bathroom down the line.
