A rising star of golf has booked his dream ticket to play against Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau at the US Open. Tyler Weaver, 22, secured the spot by finishing 11-under par across 36 holes at the Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta.

The performance ensured the son of ITV Racing pundit and Classic-winning jockey Jason Weaver will rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in the business on June 12-15.

"It’s been a really positive season for me so far with some good results, but this is definitely up there with my biggest achievement," Weaver junior told England Golf. "Playing in a major championship is a dream of mine and still hasn’t quite set in that I will be teeing it up at Oakmont this year."

A total of 47 spots on 'golf's longest day' were available, with candidates battling it out across 36 holes to go forward to Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Weaver, who hails from Bury St Edmunds, pipped players including 2023 Ryder Cup Captain Zach Johnson, Rickie Fowler and Max Homa.

"My preparation is going to be similar to any other tournament," Weaver added. "I have the Palmer Cup this week and then will be heading straight to Oakmont to spend a few days getting ready for the Thursday.

"I am extremely lucky to have the support network that I do, and none of this would be possible without them."

Based at Florida State University, Weaver practised his sport at Newmarket Links Golf Club, an 18-hole course with views of the town's prestigious tracks.

His dad Jason, who rode over 1,000 winners and analyses races on ITV, is also a member and said he was "chuffed" by the result.

"He has put a huge amount of work in and I've got to give him a big pat on the back," he told Sky Sports Racing. "The world is a very small place now and he was good enough, got a scholarship over at Tallahassee in Florida State and he puts a huge amount of work in which you have to.

"He has Luke Clanton as part of that squad, the number one amateur in the world who has just turned professional, so he has had something to aim at."

Golfing legend and racehorse owner Lee Westwood was among those cheering the achievement, with Weaver junior set to tee off in a competition which also includes full-time dentist and American amateur Matt Vogt.

"Congratulations Tyler," Westwood said on X. "What a place to play your first @usopengolf. Oakmont is a beast."
