Former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s huge net worth still engulfs the majority of Premier League owners, though he would sit below seven of the Blues’ current rivals in the top-flight rich-list.

The UK government have recently threatened to sue Abramovich to ensure that the £2.5billion in proceeds from the club’s sale go to Ukraine. A UK bank account containing the funds has been frozen since the deal was completed, which the 58-year-old oligarch sanctioned following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Abramovic has claimed that he wants the money to go to "all victims of the war in Ukraine", while the government has called for the money to be used for Ukrainian humanitarian aid. In a joint statement, Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Foreign Secretary David Lammy confirmed that they are prepared to handle the matter in court.

The delay in releasing the funds centres on a disagreement between the UK government and his lawyers, having been given a special licence to sell Chelsea, provided that he would not benefit from the sale.

Abramovic has been accused of having strong ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, something he has denied.

The £2.5bn only accounts for a portion of Abramovich’s huge net worth, though, with the businessman worth £6.8bn according to Forbes.

That figure pales in comparison to some of the owners who are in place, including Newcastle’s Saudi Arabian owners. In 2021, a consortium of the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), PCP Capital Partners, and the Reuben Brothers successfully bought the north-east side.

PIF have become a major player in world sport, through the creation of LIV Golf and partnerships with the ATP and WTA tours, they boast a mammoth net worth of £459bn, which is more than every Premier League club owner’s net worth combined.

They are followed by Manchester United, majority owned by the Glazer family and part-owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe. They have a combined net worth of £15.1bn.

United are followed by Arsenal and Stan Kroenke, who has a £12.5bn net worth, the third largest in the league. The American businessman also owns the Los Angeles Rams NFL team and NBA franchise Denver Nuggets.

Behind Arsenal is Manchester City’s ownership, the Abu Dhabi United Group, which owns 82 per cent of the club. Emirati royal Sheikh Mansour runs the club and has an estimated net worth of £12.4bn.

West Ham are controlled by David Sullivan, 1890s holds and Vanessa Golf on behalf of the Family Trust, and have a combined net worth of £11.1bn, making them the fifth-richest owners in the league.

Liverpool FC owners John W Henry and Tom Werner, on behalf of the Fenway Sports Group, come in at sixth with a combined net worth of £9.6bn, followed by Aston Villa’s V Sports owners with £7.6bn.

All seven stand ahead of Abramovich’s wealth, who would sit eighth on the list had he not been bought out by the Clearlake Capital Group and Todd Boehly, who have an estimated net worth combined of £11.7bn - good enough for fifth on the rich list.
