People in England urged not to cut their grass this week

People in England have been urged not to cut their grass this week as high levels of grass pollen are likely to cause trouble for hayfever sufferers. Weather conditions in England are undergoing a changeable pattern, with pollen levels high - and many Brits are already suffering from worsening hay fever symptoms.

Hay fever is a common allergy that causes sneezing, coughing and itchy eyes. While there are no ways to cure it, the NHS advised a list of dos and dont’s that may ease out the symptoms. Symptoms are usually worse between late March and September, especially when it's warm, humid and windy.

This is when the pollen count is at its highest. Alex Burkill, a meteorologist with the Met Office warned on Monday: “Many of you may be suffering from hay fever at the moment, particularly across parts of central southern England due to some high or very high levels of grass pollen causing a problem at the moment.”

Hay fever can last for weeks or months, unlike a cold, which usually goes away after one to two weeks. According to the NHS, it is advisable not to cut grass or walk on the grass during periods of high pollen levels as it can worsen the symptoms.

Hay fever impacts nearly 10 million people across England, affecting individuals of all ages. This accounts for almost one in four adults and one in ten children, with research indicating that the number of sufferers continues to rise each year.

The Met Office also explained: “Avoid drying washing outdoors when the pollen count is high or when cutting the grass, as this can bring pollen into the house.”

According to the weather forecast, several parts of England are likely to experience heavy rain as June starts with unsettled conditions.
