Petrol and diesel owners told they will 'use less fuel' by pressing one simple button

Motorists with the keys to petrol and diesel vehicles could use “less fuel” by pressing a simple switch located on most modern vehicles. Experts at the AA have explained that making sure the stop/start system is activated was vital before setting off.

According to specialists, leaving an engine to idle while sitting in traffic is a bad idea with fuel and emissions likely to soar. However, stop/start technology can automatically switch off the engine when the car comes to a standstill. This will ensure petrol and diesel is not unnecessarily drained while waiting in traffic, helping cash-strapped road users save the pennies.

The AA said: “Yes, start-stop technology can save you fuel, especially in stop-and-go traffic. By shutting off the engine when it's not needed, you use less fuel over time.

“The added bonus here is that you’ll save money in the long run, because you won’t need to top up at a petrol station as often.

“There's a common worry that frequent starting and stopping can harm the engine.

“However, Stop-start systems are designed to prevent engine damage by using reinforced starter motors and batteries that can handle frequent restarts.

“These systems ensure that the engine only stops and starts under optimal conditions, reducing wear and tear on engine components and maintaining durability.”

The switch is usually located on the centre console or dashboard while some newer cars may have a setting on the touchscreen infotainment display.

According to the AA, previous UK studies have shown the technology could achieve fuel savings in urban driving conditions.

The stop/start system is fully automatic, meaning road users don’t need to touch anything when their car comes to a stop.

The system works by detecting a lack of vehicle motion and lack of inputs. The engine control unit (ECU) will then cut the fuel and ignition, forcing the engine to turn off.

When motorists put their car back into gear or press the throttle, the technology will automatically send a message to the car to start up the ignition.

The AA added: “Start-stop technology is a smart innovation in modern automotive design. It offers real benefits in terms of fuel savings and reduced emissions, making it a valuable feature for many drivers.”
