Many people attempt to grow tomatoes during the summer months. After all, the fruit is tasty, good for you and can add depth of flavour to many different meals. But, when you're trying to grow them, this task can be a little more tricky - at least, if you don't know all the rules you should be following.

If you enjoy spending time in the garden, worry no more, as a gardening expert has shared exactly what you need to do to witness success. Ish, known as gardening.with.ish on TikTok, said there are three rules you need to follow in order to watch your tomatoes thrive and multiply.

In a candid clip, Ish said you need to do three things to get the "best" out of your tomato plants, and they're pretty easy to do. The first things he talked about were position and heat, as tomatoes enjoy "persistent warmth."

In his opinion, the best place to grow them is in the greenhouse, as they benefit from the added humidity. As well as this, he noted the importance of using a well-rotted compost, or tomato bags, to really give them a "good boost of nutrients".

If you follow these rules then your tomatoes should "thrive", but there are still a few things you need to bear in mind. At least, if you want to get the most out of your plants.

He added: "Next up, the best thing you can do is prune or pinch off those little side shoots. Now, this tomato plant will want to bush out as best as it can in order to be able to generate a good, healthy plant, but we want more tomatoes.

"And this here, the little side shoot coming out of the stem, is stopping it from getting all the energy to the tomatoes, and more to the plant. All you've got to do is take your finger and thumb and pinch them off like that.

"By stunting its growth, you create one main stem, which will keep this nice and tall, and give us a nice, good side shoot with tomatoes."

He also said watering the tomatoes well is really important. According to Ish, you need to keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained, as you don't want the plants to dry out.

You can also use a tomato feed to give the plants a boost too. If you use the feed one a week during the main season of tomatoes then he said your crop should "thrive".

Since the video was shared, many people have commented to offer their thoughts. There were some very varied stories about tomato growing.

One person said: "I don't have a greenhouse. This year I will be growing tomatoes for the first time in pots. Would it be ok if I put the pots inside if the weather gets chilly?"

Ish confirmed this would be fine, as they like heat, but she wasn't the only person to ask questions. Another wrote: "My leaves are curling, even though they are in a humid environment and watered often - never dry out. Help!"

A third replied: "This is great advice. I do this." One more added: "Mine is in the greenhouse and slowly getting there."

Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: "This is my issue. I have no idea which bits to cut or remove. That's all my new fruit and veg plants!"
