Ex-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has issued a heartfelt statement following Monday's horrific incident at the Liverpool title parade. Dozens of people were hospitalised after a car ploughed into a crowd on Water Street, where Reds fans were out in force to celebrate their Premier League title win.

Legendary former Liverpool manager Klopp, who handed the reins over to Arne Slot last year, posted updates to his Instagram story as he watched the title celebrations from a high-up viewpoint in the city centre. The jubilant scenes were abruptly ended just after 6pm (BST) when a vehicle collided with a number of people, injuring around 50 and leaving four 'very, very ill in hospital', according to Mayor Steve Rotherham.

On Tuesday morning, Klopp posted a statement on social media which read: "My family and I are shocked and devestated. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are injured and affected. You'll never walk alone."

Klopp has been working as Red Bull's Global Head of Soccer since January, having pledged to take time away from touchline management following taxing spells with Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool spanning 23 years.

But his affinity for the Reds endures, and he was at Anfield on Sunday for the season-ending draw with Crystal Palace which preceded Liverpool's Premier League trophy lift.

Afterwards, the German posted pictures with his successor, Slot, and captain Virgil van Dijk with the caption: "Congratulations, Champions!! What a team, what a club, what a season! YNWA [heart]".

Merseyside police say that a 53-year-old white male from the local area, believed to be the driver of the vehicle, has been arrested. Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said: "We believe this to be an isolated incident and are not currently looking for anyone else. The incident is not being treated as terrorism."

Head of the North West Ambulance Service, Dave Kitchin, added: "Twenty-seven patients were taken to hospital, including four children. One of the children and another member of the public sustained serious injuries."

The open-top bus, packed with players, coaches and staff, departed Allerton Maze at around 2.30pm on Monday afternoon. It had just passed through Water Street, where the chaos unfolded, by the time the crowd was mown down.

First responders say that four people were trapped under the car, including a child. Along with the 27 taken to hospital, a further 20 were treated at the scene.
