Emma Raducanu offered a worrying health update immediately after beating Wang Xinyu to reach the second round of the French Open. The young Brit secured a battling 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory in two hours and 44 minutes after being taken to a decisive third set. She had to dig deep but managed to pull through and set up a blockbuster meeting with Iga Swiatek in round two.

Towards the end of the opening set, Raducanu called for a medical timeout and was treated by medics. Her vital signs were checked and she rubbed blocks of ice around her eyes. After the strap was removed from her arm, the 22-year-old dropped something in her water bottle and took a few sips.

Raducanu had three minutes to compose herself and eventually returned to the court, but offered an alarming update in her post-match interview as she admitted to feeling under the weather.

"I don't feel great," she told TNT Sports. "It would have felt worse if I had lost. I was really struggling from the start. She was a tough opponent but I'm really happy to have found a way.

"Opening rounds are never easy. I haven't been here for three years so it was a combination of several things. I knew I had to start well because it would give me the best chance to keep fighting.

"When I lost serve at the end it wasn't the end of the world. There are positives. Like a lot of top champions in the first round, they've struggled but given themselves another opportunity despite how they're feeling.

"That's a quality that is not easy to teach. My character, heart and fight really came through today and I'm proud of that."

Raducanu will be a massive underdog when she goes up against Swiatek in the second round on Wednesday. However, she believes it may turn out to be an advantage because all of the pressure will be on her opponent.

"I'm happy to have given myself another chance in the draw," she added. "I felt the noise around the match [against Swiatek] before even playing the first round.

"I'm looking forward to going out there without much pressure on me. I think my game is in a pretty good place. It's a good challenge."
