Schoolboy revealed as 24-year-old migrant after a year of classes | US | News

A 24-year-old man who posed as a teenager in order to go to school has been arrested. Accused of forgery and arrested on Monday May 19, Anthony Emmanuel Labrador Sierra started posing as a student in the US in January 2024. His forgery came to an end after a woman revealed he was the father of her child and was claiming to “homeless” and living as an “immigrant from Venezuela".

Sierra posed as a 16-year-old teenager which, according to a police report, had contacted a Ohio school in November 2023 and asked about enrolling into the school. He had contacted Perrysburg Schools and informed them that he was a victim of human trafficking, said police.

Police added that when Sierra met with the school during the enrolment process, he had presented a birth certificate from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela which included a birthdate of Dec 2, 2007.

Kathy and Brad Melfred had agreed to assist Sierra with a residence in their home and were no strangers to exchanging students in the pasts.

The couple had adoptive children in their home with Sierra moving in with them on March 21, 2024, police said.

They had also helped Sierra obtain a social security number including an Ohio driver's licence and were later granted permanent guardianship over Sierra through the Wood County Common Pleas Court Juvenile Division.

This is the latest case of high school forger after Brian McKinnon who enrolled at Bearsden Academy in 1993 despite being in his 30s.

McKinnon had given himself a completely new identity, being known as Brandon Lee from Canada and even going as far as putting on an accent to make his story more plausible.

During his time in high school, he gained five top marks in his Highers and earned himself a place at Dundee University to study medicine but his plans were derailed after his story was leaked to education authorities and the press.

The Scot made international headlines after he admitted that he hadn't “really enjoyed my last two years at school” and was “unable to do one of the subjects I wanted to do”.

The Scot's story made headlines around the world.

"I was never trying to recreate my original schooldays," he later reflected.

"I was popular enough the first time and got very good grades but I didn't really enjoy my last two years at school.

"Work moved slowly and I had been unable to do one of the subjects I wanted to do. When I went back as Brandon Lee I wasn't trying to be popular."

In addition to focusing on his studies during his second stint at school, he also participated in extra-curricular activities. He was part of the football team and even landed a leading role in the school production of South Pacific.

The extraordinary tale of how Brian fooled classmates and teachers was turned into a documentary film titled My Old School, featuring Alan Cumming in the role of Brian.
