Bedsheets feel fresher without washing them if you do a simple 10-minute task

Nothing is better than lying down on crisp and cool bedsheets after a long day, but they can quickly feel stuffy if you are not making your bed properly. Bedsheets can absorb sweat and skin oils in the hot weather, which can cause moisture to quickly build up in the fabric.

This can cause sheets to feel stiff and clammy and make them start to smell even if they have just been washed. However, Rachael Thompson, an expert from Bed Threads, has shared that a big reason sheets lose their freshness is if you trap moisture with your duvet.

She explained: “Making your bed is an important first step of the day, but if you want to keep your sheets fresh, it might be worth ‘un-making’ it.

“Instead of pulling your duvet and top sheet up to your pillows, neatly fold them back to expose the underneath of the duvet cover and the sheet to allow air to circulate. This can help reduce any odours that have been trapped overnight.”

It may seem strange, but as the temperature rises, it is better to keep your duvet and any other covers off your sheet during the day to help any moisture evaporate.

Even if you do not notice it, heat and moisture can quickly build up in your bedding, creating the perfect environment for bacteria and making the sheets feel uncomfortable to sleep on.

Letting the sheets breathe will help them stay dry and keep the fabric crisp, so you do not have to constantly wash them.

You need only pull your duvet, blankets, and any other covering off the sheets, fold them, and place them at the bottom of your bed.

If possible, also leave a window open, as it will help speed up the time it takes for your bedroom to air out.

After 10 to 30 minutes, you can remake your bed, but it is also fine to leave the bedding alone for the rest of the day if you wish.

Your bedding should stay fresh for much longer, but if you wish, you can spray it with a homemade freshener to make your sheets feel even cosier.

Rachel said: “The quickest trick of them all, a nice spritz of linen spray is a surefire way to bring a lovely scent to your bedding.”

A simple recipe is one part witch hazel, one part hazel, and then add an essential oil of your choice. Spray around your bedding every few days, and your sheets should stay wonderfully fresh.

It should be noted that many essential oils can be toxic to pets, so be very cautious and do your own research on what to use if you have a dog or cat in your home.
