The 30p item experts use to keep avocados fresh comes with warning

Keeping your avocados fresh can be a challenge but there's one cheap item many people use to keep them from browning - even though it could alter it taste. Avocados are a popular superfood to incorporate into your meals, they’re great for breakfast lunch and dinner or can even be eaten as a snack. The versatile item has lots of nutritional benefits and is a favourite in many households.

Avocados are packed with healthy fats and fibre but they are also well known for becoming overripe and mushy in a blink of an eye. According to Creative Healthy Family, you should use lemon juice to keep avocados fresh after slicing them which is a quick, easy and cheap way to keep them fresh. But food experts at The Daily Meal say too much lemon juice can cause your avocados to taste bitter.

If you’re often finding that you have half an avocado left and you can’t use the whole thing at once, then you should rub the other half with some lemon juice. You can purchase a lemon from Tesco for as little as 30p. While this method is proven to work, some find it leaves their avocados tasting bitter.

The Daily Meal says while a squeeze of lemon juice gives a hint of acidity that will balance the creamy flavor of avocado (and help stop the avocado from browning), adding too much will leave you with bitter-tasting food.

It adds that you should always remember to add a little at a time for balance.

Chef Betsy Wiegand of Great White, a coastal-Californian cafe in Venice Beach, California, says the method helps to prevent browning.

To further preserve its hue, she also emphasises the importance of storing it completely covered to reduce the oxygen exposure, reports Well and Good.

Due to the ascorbic acid (aka vitamin C) found in lemon or lime juice, adding citrus to an opened avocado helps create a barrier against oxygen that reduces oxidation.

But this isn’t the only way you can keep your avocado fresh, you can also purchase an avocado saver which is a reusable seal used for storage.

You won’t regret buying this useful kitchen item and you can also use it for other fruits or vegetables which you have cut and want to refrigerate.

Firm, unripe avocados last about a week at room temperature and up to two weeks in the refrigerator, while ripe ones expire after a few days.

Mashed and halved avocados keep in the fridge for up to two days. Freezing is another alternative to storing these fruits, and frozen avocado lasts up to six months.

By following these few simple steps, you can ensure your avocados will stay fresher for longer wihtout loosing any of their flavour or becoming sour tasting.
