Granule gravy will be so much tastier when one ingredient is added

Brits have long relied on trusty gravy granules to bring comfort and flavour to roasts, bangers and mash, and Sunday dinners. Convenient, reliable, and easy to whip up in minutes, these pantry staples have been a saviour for generations of home cooks. But according to food experts, there’s one simple ingredient that could take your instant gravy from passable to amazing.

Food publication The Kitchn recently revealed a kitchen tip that’s making waves among gravy lovers and it only requires one step while you're heating your gravy.

“Add a dash of white wine (nothing too fruity; we recommend a dry Chardonnay) to boost the richness of the turkey gravy,” their guide suggests.

“All you need to do is put a couple of tablespoons of your chosen white wine while you’re heating up your gravy and voilà! The wine should evaporate in just a couple of minutes.”

While the advice was originally offered for turkey gravy, the technique works just as well with any granule-based sauce, enhancing both depth and aroma without the need for time-consuming reductions or homemade stock.

The key lies in using a dry wine, not something too sweet or overpowering, that complements rather than masks the gravy’s flavour.

When added early in the heating process, the alcohol evaporates quickly, leaving behind only the complexity and body of the wine. This adds a glossy richness and can balance out the often overly salty or one-dimensional taste that some pre-made gravies can suffer from.

One professional chef commented: “It’s a classic restaurant trick. Even just a small amount of white wine can lift a sauce, it’s like adding a secret layer. You’d be surprised how much of a difference it makes.”

With supermarket shelves now stocked with gourmet-style granules, from beef and chicken to onion and vegetable, adding wine is a cost-effective way to elevate a midweek dinner or impress guests without starting from scratch.

So next time you reach for the kettle and your tub of granules, consider reaching for the wine rack too.
