Adam Pawson, a property expert from Safestyle, has given a stern warning about the dangers of storing certain items on windowsills. He pinpoints seven no-nos that homeowners should be acutely aware of to prevent damage or danger.

Windowsills are the perfect place for pictures, candles, and other decorative items. However, placing certain items on a windowsill could unknowingly put you and your home in harm's way. Some items could cause fires, break or leave a mess on your windowsills.

Seven items you should never place on windowsills

1. Aerosols and flammables

The first item to avoid putting on windowsills is aerosols and other flammable products. Adam insists: "It is always advisable to keep your windowsill free of aerosols such as deodorants and sprays."

The warning comes with a particular emphasis during hot spells: "This is because when exposed to direct sunlight, these items can easily build up pressure and explode, which could cause long-lasting damage to your window fitting."

2. Items with a reflective surface

Next up are items with reflective surfaces, which can pose a very "dangerous" risk under the scorching sun. Adam advises: "Make sure to move objects such as beauty mirrors away from direct sunlight and off windowsills, especially in a heatwave."

He explains that such items can act like a magnifying glass, posing fire hazards by concentrating sunlight onto combustible materials, reports Express.

3. Fragile items

Fragile items such as photo frames or ornaments should not be put on windowsills. While they may aesthetically suit a perch on the sill, experts advise against it, irrespective of the climate conditions.

4. Cleaning supplies

He then advised against storing cleaning supplies on windowsills due to the risks associated with weather changes. The changes in weather and temperature can cause cans to combust or make the chemicals less potent.

"Make sure to keep cleaning supplies away in a drawer or cupboard," he said.

5. Candles

Regarding candle placement, Adam warned: "To prevent damage and mess on your windowsill and to your window fitting as a whole, make sure to remove candles as the wax could easily melt and can be difficult to remove."

He cautioned about the dangers of sunlight on candles: "Another key reason to keep candles away from windows is that while they don't appear to be a hazard, if exposed to direct sunlight, they can ignite, posing a fire risk."

6. Shower gels

For those grappling with limited bathroom space, it's common to stash shower gels and assorted toiletries on the windowsill.

However, this seemingly savvy storage solution can backfire, as proximity to windows can lead to a slimy mess. "Instead, store away from the window in a cupboard to keep items unspoiled."

7. Cleaning and safety

While not strictly an item, Adam stressed the importance of window safety and cleanliness, noting: "Firstly, depending on how your window opens, these items could potentially restrict access to opening and closing your window which we wouldn't recommend as it limits your ability to ventilate your home.

"Secondly, if the window is open, a gust of wind could cause valuable items to blow over, causing damage."

He added that keeping windowsills clutter-free is crucial for effective cleaning: "Keep windowsills free from birthday cards, vases, bottles and anything else to ensure that you can effectively clean them."

Adam highlighted the importance of tidiness when preparing to sell your home: "Keeping it clutter-free will help to ensure that you can clean the whole of your window, getting into the corners of the frame.

"This is also important if you're looking to sell your home, as keeping your home free of clutter will help to attract potential buyers."
