M&S unable to take on new workers as disruptions continue after cyber-attack | Marks & Spencer

Marks & Spencer is unable to hire new workers as the retailer continues to suffer disruption to its operations caused by a cyber-attack.

The company confirmed on Thursday that it had pulled all online job postings from its website as tech experts tried to resolve problems on its platforms.

A message on M&S’s jobs website said: “Sorry you can’t search or apply for roles right now, we’re working hard to be back online as soon as possible.”

The company had no jobs listed anywhere across its UK business on Thursday despite having more than 200 job openings the previous week.

The business employs about 65,000 people in its London head office and stores.

The retailer’s IT systems were hit by a major ransomware attack more than a week ago. It is still not taking online orders, and the availability of some products in its stores was affected after it took some of its systems offline in response.

M&S first reported issues over Easter weekend, when it stopped taking click-and-collect orders and its contactless payments were affected by the “cyber incident”. Contactless payments have since restarted.

The Metropolitan police confirmed on Wednesday that it was investigating a cyber-attack.

In a separate incident, it emerged on Wednesday that the rival retailer Co-op shut off parts of its IT systems after an attempted hack. It said some of its back office and call centre services had been affected but that all stores, including its grocery and funeral outlets, were trading as usual.

The BBC reported on Thursday that staff at the business were being ordered to keep cameras on and verify identities on all remote work meetings as a result.
