Garden pests are something that are inevitable, but there are plenty of ways to deal with the issue when it does come your way and an expert has revealed just how to do that without ruining your garden and supporting healthy growth - the best of both worlds. According to the garden expert from Deer Fencing, there are four plants that can naturally deter insects from your garden, and they are low-maintenance meaning this extremely efficent in various ways.

According to garden expert, Doug O'Connor, there are certain flowering plants that release compounds and scents that will put off insects. "These plants aren't just ornamental, they serve a vital purpose in keeping your garden healthier, naturally," he says. All it takes is making the right selections that will result in a "vibrant space that's both attractive and more resilient against pests."

Lavender

The garden staple loved for its calming scent and beautiful purple blooms also acts as a great pest deterrent. Doug explained: "Lavender's strong aroma, which comes from natural oils like linalool, repels moths, fleas, and mosquitoes." The expert recommends planting it along paths, borders or near seating areas as those are the areas it is "particulary effective".

The plant thrives in sunny, well-drained areas, which makes it an ideal low-maintenance addition to gardens.

Marigolds

The plant's disctinctive scent also deters common garden pests including asphids, whiteflies, and soil-dwelling nematodes. Marigolds contains a compound called pyrethrum, which Doug says is "a natural insecticide". He adds: "They’re especially effective when planted alongside vegetables like tomatoes or courgettes."

The plants which are easy to grow and bloom for months, mix espeically well in planting beds or borders.

Chrysanthemums

Not only do these plants add bold, vibrant colour gardens but their high pyrethrin content in this plant makes it among the most effective insect-repelling flowers. "Chrysanthemums repel everything from ants and lice to ticks and cockroaches," says the expert.

Placing chrysanthemums near doorways or windows will discourage insects from making their way indoors.

Daffodils

Known as being a symbol of spring, the beautiful flowers also have insect-repelling features. The alkaloid content deters pest such as slugs, whilst their bulbs are unappetising to rodents.

"They’re low-effort and naturalise easily, meaning they’ll come back year after year with minimal care,” Doug explains. “Plus, they help protect more vulnerable plants nearby."
